Kuri was the brainchild and flagship product of Mayfield Robotics which was founded in 2015. Mayfield wanted to create useful home robots that also provided inspiration and joy.
They dubbed Kuri the ‘most adorable’ home robot. The company had three co-founders, Mike Beebe, Sarah Osentoski, and Kaijen Hsiao.
The company found that people wanted home robots that enhanced home security by, for example, interacting with outdoor cameras. They wanted one that would spot intruders and alert owners.
They also wanted the robot to be useful whether the owner is at home or not – and could make a good impression on guests in the home. They wanted an entertaining robot that sent pet videos to owners away at work or traveling.
Buyers could check in on their homes at any time. Kuri roams around the home autonomously and interacts with people and pets, taking nice videos and sharing them through the app.
Kuri is not like a home security camera that records constantly. It does allow owners to check in whenever they need to and will greet children when they arrive home from school and check on pets as needed as well as alert you of any intruders. It gives you peace of mind while you are away.
When you are at home, she can play music and dance to it as well as play podcasts and audiobooks. Interactions with Kuri are also meant to be pleasant and likable. She purrs, sneezes, and giggles.
By partnering with IFTTT, the makers of Kuri made it possible for users to enjoy a customized smart home centered on Kuri.
After its launch in 2017, Kuri was all the rage. He appeared at tech events and made several media appearances.
He won several awards from magazines like PC Magazine, WIRED, and Engadget. He appeared on TV shows like Today Show, BuzzFeed as well as magazines like TechCrunch, CNET, Popular Science, and WIRED.
Kuri even made an impression on Showbiz events like the Sundance Film Festival, CES 2018, TED2018, and SXSW.
Pros
• Kuri’s small stature made it ideal for capturing videos of pets and young children. It has a 1080p HD camera.
• Kuri is better than a home security camera because it provides companionship. The robot takes commands and can follow you, entertaining you with podcasts, music, or audiobooks as you go about your business. It can even dance with you. Because Kuri was intended for home use, Mayfield designed it to be friendly and cute with an endearing voice.
• Kuri didn’t just wait for people to talk to him. He could move around the home and start conversations with people as well as interact with pets.
Cons
• Kuri failed to find a product-market fit. Because other smart assistant solutions performing most of the same tasks at a fraction of the cost, it did not take off the way it was expected to.
The robot initially focused on home security, providing owners with peace of mind. The final result was Kuri, a robot that provided companionship while you were home and worked as a videographer while you were away.
Mayfield announced that it was stopping the production of Kuri in mid-2018. Not long after, the company itself folded because it could not mobilize the capital needed to continue operations.
Even though the product did not take off as expected, Kuri proved useful for the customers who bought it.

Security has always been a major problem for centuries. There have been some appalling security breaches in the past that left the world shocked. It sometimes feels like no security is good enough no matter how hard a company tries.

However, with every passing year, security is strengthened thanks to the innovative ways of engineers that seem promising.

What Does Security Robots Mean For Humans?

The world is switching to the latest technology, and we can witness domestic robots doing a lot of human work. However, it does not mean that robots will completely take over every job that a human can do.

No matter how advanced a robot is, it can’t replace what humans are capable of doing. Eventually, it comes down to humans taking care of any security breach. Robots can only help in those areas where humans lack or where humans can’t work.

There is a great example of a security robot from Knightscope. This domestic robot is developed to study faces, read license plates and gather all the necessary data. This can only happen when the security robot constantly keeps an eye on everything.

This is the kind of surveillance that humans can’t do. In this situation, security robots can play a crucial and better role. And it only makes sense to put a robot instead of a security guard to perform trivial tasks.

Such security patrol robots enhance the security system and offer high-quality safety. In addition to this, security robots also cut down the costs in the long run. These highly efficient robots may only be expensive at the time of purchase. Otherwise, it is a one-time investment for long-term security.

Security Robots Are Even Close To Replacing Humans

Robots are only restrained to analyzing and collecting data. They are not enabled to stop the security breach. The most they can do is to set off an alarm to notify the officials that something has gone wrong. Otherwise, that is where the role of a robot ends.

It is human intervention that can solve the matter. Only humans can catch the insult and security robots can’t. The investigation is not complete without humans involved in it. So if the robot does the primary work, it is the human that has to get the final job done.

What Does The Future Of These Domestic Robots Hold?

The future of security robots looks very promising. Governments, private companies, security companies will only continue to use this extensive technology to improve their safety. Not only does it provide accurate and updated information, but it also prevents putting the lives of security guards in danger.

Final Word

Security robots have revolutionized the way security systems work. Everything is ten times more secure with the help of these patrolling robots.

Plus, ten years from now, we never know how ultra-modern this technology will become, but robot engineers are surely determined on blowing our minds away!

Humans do a great job at surveillance and can maintain strict security. But what if someone needs constant surveillance?

This is where a domestic robot like security robots hop in. Both humans and robots have their limitations. However, none has an upper hand over others.

With a security robot like a webcam, you can constantly look over at the place you want to keep secure. In such cases, a security robot has some fantastic uses that giant companies make use of.

With precision and excellent analytical ability, security robots allow you to keep your valuables under strict security measures. However, would it do anything if an intruder breaches the security? The robot can’t do much, and eventually, humans will have to step in.

Are countries around the world relying on security robots to maintain security? At the present times, the answer seems to be yes.

Countries Are Switching To Domestic Robots

According to the latest news, many countries around the world are trusting domestic robots for their widespread safety.

We already know how advanced Dubai is. Talk of any latest technology, and you will find it in Dubai. The country has adopted its first security robot from SMP productions. The officials introduced their security robots on the Intersec 2020.

There is a particular and a very logical reason why Dubai made this decision. We know Gulf countries suffer from severe weather. The extremely hot weather makes it unbearable for humans to patrol on the streets. Dubai is switching to robots for surveillance under the blazing sun, and the decision was taken delightfully by the public.

On the other hand, Australia is following in the steps of Dubai and they have also approved their first security robot that will also produce green hydrogen.

Other countries like Italy and several countries in Europe have been using security robots like webcams ever since 2019.

Make Your Homes Safer

Even though it is hard for robot companies to supply robots to end-users for private use because the robots need a person with the expertise to handle them and security robots also need maintenance frequently, private security robots are still available.

However, simpler versions of security robots are available for home security. Robots like S5 PTZ security patrol robots roam around the house to scare wild animals, illuminate dark areas of the house for better surveillance. You are always connected to the robot as they keep sending you data via wireless broadband routers.

Such robots are for personal use, which is why you can start using security robots even if the government has not.

Security Robots Are Foolproof

Do you know what SMP’s most affordable edition of robots S5.2 does?

They patrol an area and detect anyone who is not wearing a mask! How intelligent is this robot? It is installed with a camera that can look 360 degrees and detects in a vicinity of 2 to 4 feet. You can’t pass these robots. If you are not wearing a mask, you’ll be caught! Can’t fool a robot, can we?

These robots save much more data than a human could. Their mobile surveillance could come a lot in handy for many malls, offices, government places, and many other areas in the future!

Final Word

Security robots are definitely taking the place of the conventional security guards and our technology world seems to keep offering more and all of it for the right reasons!
